This course is designed for students that undertake an apprenticeship in a salon and are signed to a Training Contract. The study provides the ‘off-the-job’ training required to obtain a Certificate III in Hairdressing and to become, in conjunction with your work in the salon, a qualified hairdresser.

Course Description

The Apprentice Training Program offers competency-based training that places the emphasis on interaction between the salon owner, the apprentice and Clip Joint Education. The curriculum is designed with the salon in mind ensuring that the apprentice is receiving the most relevant and current foundation hairdressing training.

Clip Joint Education prides itself on high standards of training, focusing on core foundations; hairdressing, communication, consultation and practical hairdressing skills.

The core curriculum is designed with the salon in mind to ensure that the apprentice is receiving the most relevant and current foundation hairdressing training. Tools and resources such as Sassoon ABC Cutting and Colouring Laser Disc teaching system allow us to train the apprentice with the most current technology available. Manageable class sizes and the focus on demonstrations and one-on-one training throughout the course, ensures that the apprentice is receiving essential learning foundation in their career. Class sizes are approximately 15 students and all modules (apart from relevant work experience) are conducted on premises at Clip Joint Education.

Students work in a salon style environment to learn how to become proficient as a Salon Assistant. Listed below are just some of the skills that students will learn:

  • Head, shoulder and scalp massage
  • Shampoo hair professionally
  • Blow-dry long hair
  • Set and blow-dry short hair
  • Creative styling
  • Braiding and creative long hair up-styling
  • Colour, lightening application and removal
  • Chemical reformation (perming)
  • Ladies and Men's combination haircutting.


Study outcomes

On completion of your studies you will receive a Certificate III in Hairdressing WRH30109, issued by Clip Joint Education.
On completion of your Training Contract you will receive your Certificate of Competency in Hairdressing issued by the State Government.

Course duration

Approximately 18 months [860 nominal hours]
This course is competency based and can be completed in a shorter time-frame. Apprentice training days are either on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, or in block training of 3 consecutive days per month. Training hours are 9am to 4.30pm.

Steps for Enrolment

  • Find a salon that will employ you as an apprentice.
  • Once employed, your salon owner/manager will contact an Australian Apprenticeship Centre to arrange your contract.
  • Sign a Training Contract between you and your employer.
  • You will then receive a letter from Clip Joint Education inviting you to make an appointment for induction into your course.
  • You must attend the induction appointment prior to commencement.
  • Pay your initial payment and return your Enrolment Agreement.
  • Attend Orientation day.
  • Start classes.

Note.If you are under 18 years of age, you will be required to have a parent/guardian present at any formal appointment (e.g. signing of documentation).
